Gutknecht Supports Federal Marriage Amendment
September 30, 2004
Washington, DC - First District Congressman Gil Gutknecht today issued the following statement upon his 'yes' vote on H.J. Res. 106, the Federal Marriage Amendment. The measure received a 227-186 majority, but failed to get the two-thirds majority required of a Constitutional amendment:
"Few of us really want to amend the Constitution. There are, of course, strong arguments on both sides. I came to the conclusion that, in order to rein in on these unelected, activist judges, this may be the only remedy available.
Virtually every organized religion - Christian, Jewish and Muslim - has defended the sanctity of marriage. Changing the definition could have a devastating impact on churches that refuse to perform same-sex marriages."
Gutknecht is the chairman of the House Agriculture Subcommittee on Department Operations, Oversight, Nutrition and Forestry; vice chairman of the House Science Committee; and member of the House Budget Committee.
